Home Secretary David Blunkett has slapped a ban on a planned National Front march in Bradford.

His decision was announced on Wednesday afternoon, after representations from Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Police.

The NF had said it would march in Bradford on Saturday. Counter-demonstrations by the TUC and Anti-Nazi League had also been mooted.

Police had urged the Home Secretary to use his powers to ban all marches across the district. They feared a repeat of the violence seen in Oldham and Burnley in the last few weeks.

The ban covers not only Bradford but also surrounding towns and cities within a wide radius.
