Bradford celebrated the 200th birthday of the United States of America in style - with General Custer and friends turning up outside the Law Courts. The celebrations were partly organised by Bradford College. A procession left the fountain outside the Law Courts and made its way up Longside Lane, off Richmond Road, near Bradford University, where a mural of the battle of Wounded Knee on the wall of one of the university buildings made a fitting backcloth to the day's celebrations.

With cries of delight a group of tiny children at Lister Lane School for physically-handicapped children today gathered round a bird cage. Perched inside they saw a beautifully coloured budgerigar. Children in other schools throughout Yorkshire may soon have the opportunity of doing the same, for it is the aim of the Yorkshire Budgerigar Society to give a bird to every school in the county.
