Three people were arrested following an invasion of the Menwith Hill American military base base near Harrogate.

The arrests yesterday afternoon followed an invasion by about 100 Greenpeace activists who entered the US national-security site early in the morning.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said one person had been charged with possessing an offensive weapon and two others with criminal damage.

"I can confirm that about 12 people managed to climb onto a water tower and another 18 got onto the single-storey roof of a store room," she said.

Greenpeace claim the base is to be used as part of US President George Bush's planned "Son of Star Wars" missile-defence system.

Louise Edge, of Greenpeace, said about 50 protesters were ejected from the base.
