Harrogate

Union

KEIGHLEY Golf Club hosted the away match for the Harrogate Union team against one of the strongest Union teams Bradford. The overall score was 26-10 to Bradford.

The morning foursomes were very closely fought but the Bradford team secured a comfortable win. Although four matches went to the 18th green for a result, a three and two win by the pairing of Stuart MacFarlane (Pannal) and Tim Moorhouse (Harrogate) was the best result for Harrogate.

The afternoon singles did not show much improvement and it was not until Carl Simpkin (Ripon) managed to halve his match that Harrogate got any points on the board. This was followed by Joe Buckley (Harrogate) recording a three and one win and Tim Walsh (Otley) returning a matching score. The only other victory was achieved by Steven Whitwham (Bedale).

Results (with Harrogate names first) - Foursomes: Ian Richardson and Kevin Ward lost two down to Darryl Berry and Gareth Evans; Carl Peirson and Carl Simpkin halved with Simon Bell and Martin Foster; Joe Buckley and Tim Walsh lost one down to Ian Martin and Andrew Dufton; Julian Beer and Ian Morgan lost four and two to Andrew Utley and Andrew Riley; Stuart MacFarlane and Tim Moorhouse won three and two over Andrew Town and Karl Curran; Steven Whitwham and Russell Brown lost one down to Matthew Roche and James Firth. Foursomes: Harrogate three, Bradford nine.

The Seniors' Championship was played at Bedale Golf Club on a beautiful hot day with the course in top condition. Senior Union members enjoyed this day out and it was pleasing to record the overall winner was Eric Clark from Masham Golf Club. He was not the only Masham member to receive a prize, for Derek Pickard also attended the presentation to pick up the 'Runner-Up' prize in the 70 plus category.

With three matches played in the Senior Inter-Club League, a tie for leader between Pannal and Ripon City lends one to assume that we could be in for an exciting season. Results to date: Six points - Pannal and Ripon City; four points - Harrogate; three points - Bedale; two points - Knaresborough, Oakdale, Otley, Thirsk and Northallerton; one point - Masham.

In the parallel Junior League some clubs have played more matches than others, so comparison is rather difficult. However, at the top with six points are Harrogate, Thirsk and Northallerton.

Although Harrogate have only played three matches to Thirsk and Northallerton's five.

Other scores are Oakdale played four with five points; Otley played 3-5; Bedale and Knaresborough 3-4; Pannal played 6-4; Ripon City 3-4; Ilkley played 4-3 and Masham 6-1.

Ilkley Ladies

Golf

Rain was threatened, but did not materialise on the day of Ilkley Golf Club's official mixed foursomes competition the Hepworth trophy.

A number of mothers and sons entered, also husbands and wives, however the winning combination was a proud Grandmother, Daphine Hawkins, with her grandson Adam Davey a promising junior at Ilkley. Together they played good golf with a finishing score of 681/2, closely followed in second place on 691/2 by M Curtis and Mrs J Foster. The day was rounded off with a prizegiving and dinner.

A prize day, kindly given by Jackie Foster and Kath Pickles, provided a different sort of interest. It was a greensome, with the added difficulty of each player only being allowed nine drives; not the usual format. Clearly this did not trouble Jill Parfitt or her partner Di Spratt who romped home with 37 points. Second place went to Ann Gillon and Margaret Pack on 36 points.

The very good news of the week comes from Ann Newman and Margaret Pack who travelled to Crewe Golf Club in Cheshire for the Northern Division Finals of the Coronation Foursomes and won it with a commendable three under par 69. Their next step is to hopefully sweep the board at the national finals to be played on the new course at St Andrews in October.

In the Edleston Trophy, two to qualify followed by match play, the winner in Division One was Liz

Webster 84-15-69. In Division Two the winner was Angela Harrison 95-33-62 pulling five shots off her handicap forthwith.

In the same week Liz and Angela played the match for the trophy. Liz was the winner beating Angela 2 and 1.

The scratch team lost away at Huddersfield 4 and 3. The winners were A Newman, M Brand, newly back from America for ten weeks, and M Schofield.

The A team halved their match at home against Bingley St. Ives. Pat Wright, Maureen Schofield and Liz Webster won, and Daphne Hawkins halved for a 3 1/2 to 3 1/2 result.

The B team had a good 6 and 1 win at home against Filey. Winning ladies were J Parfitt, P Blackburn, A Gillon, J Foster, J Bennett and M Mitchell.
