Bradford body-builder Jason Barnett will have the world championships in his sights when he competes for the British title at Cambridge on Sunday.

Barnett, who is a special needs assistant at Haycliffe School, Bradford, has been invited to go to Hungary for the European championships the following week.

However, he would dearly love to be picked for the British team for the world championships in Italy at the end of November.

Sunday's winners qualify to represent Great Britain. There are four weight classes from lightweight through to heavyweight. At the end of the show the winners will go forward to represent the country in that weight class.

Barnet, who competes at under-70 kilos, said: "My main rival is Steve Short from Barnstaple.

"I have beaten him four years out of five. We are contrasting physiques. He tends to be a leaner athlete, but I carry more mass with a better body shape.

"It is a question as to whether I will be picked for the British team. I have been in the top three for the last four or five years.

"I have won the English championship overall and I was joint winner of the British title at Leeds in 1998 when three of us tied for the championship.

"I would dearly love to win the British championship outright on Sunday.

"Only the winner in each section is definitely picked for the British team, but the governing body, the Association of Natural Body Builders may decide to take two or three other guys as well.

"The first two rounds on Sunday are symmetry and muscularity, but in the third and final round to music you are looking to show your strengths and hide your weaknesses and provide an entertaining routine."

Barnett added: "I am grateful to my sponsors Aktivbodz in North Parade, Bradford and Parks Fitness and Planet Fitness who let me train at their premises."
