Youngsters in Cottingley are fighting to get a village skateboard park off the ground.

A group of 14 children, aged 11 to 14, presented their wish-list and a 305-signature petition to Shipley Area Panel at the Cottingley neighbourhood forum meeting.

Spokesman Karl Hellens said they were fed up of having nowhere to use their skateboards, in-line skates and BMX bikes.

"The only decent hard surface is on The Parade but we get in people's way," said the 11-year-old Bingley Grammar School pupil.

"One shopkeeper is always coming out and telling us to move on. There are lots of pavements in Cottingley but they're not smooth enough."

The group would like to see part of the recreation ground in Manor Road converted into a park with ditches, known as 'pools', and ramps.

Karl said he would also like to arrange competitions and displays.

Tony Roche, of Parade Fisheries, in The Parade, said it was encouraging to see youngsters taking the initiative.

"They have nowhere to go and so many of the youngsters up here have bikes and scooters so a park for them would be ideal," he said. "They try to do tricks on the plant tubs on The Parade but it's not suitable and one day there could be an accident."

Council leader and Bingley Councillor Margaret Eaton said she was impressed with the children's campaign.

"I have started looking into it and will be talking to the recreation department about what can be done," she said.
