IS Wharfedale second-row forward David 'Dude' Lister the toughest player currently involved in English rugby? (writes Tony Simpson).

On the evidence of the landmark the popular Dalesman reaches tomorrow, when the Greens visit Orrell, the answer must by an unequivocal 'Yes', for in running out for his 89th consecutive league game, Lister equals a record set on April 1, 1994 by Rotherham's Richard Selkirk.

Exeter's Andy Mauder sees his name expunged from the National Division record books as Lister overtakes his impressive tally of 88 successive league games, but it is in setting a joint best mark for teams from every league in the land that Lister really sets a tremendous standard. The impressive aspect of his record breaking is the fact that he has been in the thick of the action in every one of those league games.

To survive each week without serious injury - especially when the highs and lows of being a lineout jumper are included in the scenario - is a remarkable achievement, especially for such a committed player.

"David's record means a fantastic amount to us," says Wharfedale's Director of Rugby, Michael Harrison. "We were told when he joined us from what a genuine, hard-working lad he was and he's lived up to that reputation in every way.

"He's keen to train and keen to play, week-in and week-out and from a coaches perspective, you couldn't wish for a better player to work with. On the playing side, he's no man mountain, but he's been in the thick of the action in every game and his body has stood up to the pummelling he's had to take.

"We were very disappointed when a piece of foul play robbed Hedley Verity of the chance to reach the milestone after getting to 87 consecutive league games, so there is consolation that one of Hedley's team-mates has done the job.

Lister and his team-mates face a stern test tomorrow against an Orrell side which is starting to hit form.

Wharfedale's only change to the line-up which accounted for Esher sees Neil Heseltine at centre for Andy Hodgson, who is still troubled with a knee injury.
