Police patrols will be stepped up in Bradford on bonfire weekend to avoid a repeat of the summer's riots.

After months of planning there will be a high visibility presence across the district to respond quickly to any outbreaks of disorder.

Officers will be working alongside the fire service, youth service officers and Bradford Council's Emergency Planning staff to make sure trouble is kept to a minimum.

Chief Superintendent Phil Read said a similar operation last year proved successful with officers reacting quickly to any arson attacks or reports of people causing trouble.

He said: "After events this summer we want to provide a high visibility presence and reassure people we will be ready to respond quickly to quell any outbreaks of disorder.

"People intent on causing trouble can also expect to be filmed by evidence gatherers or officers in specialist video vans."

Ch Supt Read said: "We ask people to stay off the streets this bonfire weekend and enjoy organised fireworks displays or other diversionary events put on by the Youth Service.

"We hope people will continue to pull together so Bradford can bounce back from the devastating scenes which marred the city this summer."

He urged anyone with any information about those intent on causing trouble to contact the police.

West Yorkshire Fire community safety officer Brian Robson said: "This is a busy time for us, traditionally one of the busiest weekends in the year.

"We would ask people to be sensible with the bonfires they build and be patient with us if we have to come along or offer advice.

"We would also ask the public to confine their fireworks to displays and not use them on the streets.

"We are all hoping for a safe and peaceful weekend."
