CONONLEY is taking steps to combat vandalism and unsociable behaviour by trying to relieve the boredom felt by local youngters.

At a public meeting in early October, residents expressed their concerns at windows being smashed, eggs being thrown at their property, anonymous phone calls being made and abusive and threatening language being used by youngsters.

Two teenagers Richard Drake, 15, and Mathew Barraclough, 16, explained at the meeting, that one of the reasons behind the problems could be boredom.

Since then, more meetings were organised between young villagers and a small group of adults to try to get to the root of the problem.

A recent meeting at the Church Centre was attended by 14 youths and plans were made for future excursions.

The group did not finalise a decision as to where to go, but a code of conduct was discussed, involving the rules to be observed on this and future trips.

It is now hoped that a youth group can now be formally established to co-ordinate excursions and activities.

Becky Ward, who has been involved in the project from the outset, explained that forming such a group would depend on finding a more permanent meeting place and support from other local agencies.

She said: "Since that first public meeting there have been adults interested in helping and a really enthusiastic and sensible response from the young people in the village.

"We are keeping our fingers crossed that something more permanent can be arranged.

"It's been so encouraging so far and I've been really impressed with the regular attendance at the meetings ranging from 11 to 16 years old.

"They are really taking this seriously, they know we don't have a lot of money for the project but seem prepared to put themselves out to try to help themselves, which is the kind of positive attitude we are looking for."

Resident Alan Parker added: "We have been holding these meetings to see how the youngsters respond and are treading carefully - it's a question of watch this space.

"We want to progress positively and work with the young people. More parents and other adults have also started to come along to help us and it's been well attended."

More voluntary help is still needed and any one interested can contact Becky Ward through the Parish Council.

The parish council will discuss the proposals at its next meeting on Tuesday, November 13.

A further meeting has been arranged for the young people at 6.30pm next Tuesday, November 6, in the Church Centre followed by a meeting of interested adults and parents at 7.30pm.
