A Skipton teenager and the daughter of a Bradford policeman have been shortlisted for a bravery award.

Alice Maddocks and Georgina Taylor have both been put forward for a Yorkshire Young Achievers 2001 award.

They will be meeting stars including model Nell McAndrew and Emmerdale star Chris Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard, at a glittering ceremony at Leeds United Football Club next week to find out if they have won an accolade.

Alice, nine, suffers from a life threatening disorder Severe Aplastic Anamia, and her parents, Dean and Carol, created their own website in a bid to find a suitable donor.

Mr Maddocks, a police officer based in the Bradford South division, said Alice was a huge Emmerdale fan and was looking forward to meeting some of the soap stars.

"Alice is quite excited about it all. It will be nice to be able to go to something like this with family and friends who have supported us."

She has been nominated for the award by Margaret Watson, of Dewsbury Means Business, who said: "Her outstanding courage in dealing with a serious and painful illness is an inspiration to us all."

"Despite being desperately ill, she has done some amazing work in helping others who are suffering from similar blood disorders and, like Alice, are awaiting bone marrow transplants.''

Georgina Taylor, 18, of Cracoe, near Skipton, discovered she had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in her first week at Threshfield Primary School and has been in and out of hospital since.

Despite missing lessons, she made up for lost time through home study and, after securing four A-levels at Skipton Girls High School, she has just started a degree at London School of Economics.

She has been nominated for managing to achieve her academic goals in the face of serious illness.

The awards event aims to raise more than £25,000 for children's charity NCH.
