LUKE Howson, a member of Keighley Boxing Club, marked his boxing debut with a splendid points vic-tory over Sheffield's Ahmed Saleh at a promotion at the Bankfield Hotel, Shipley last week.

Howson, progressed to his ring debut via the Amateur Boxing Association's Kid Gloves scheme which had been overseen locally by David Binns from Keighley Amateur Boxing Club.

The Skipton youngster dis-played some competent touches against an opponent already possession ring experience and took the verdict by a unanimous decision.

The success was another feather in the cap of coach Binns, who has had his own talents recognised by his ap-pointment to the England coaching squad for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.

The Shipley promotion at-tracted generous support and was also used as the occasion for the presentation of three memorial trophies.

The Boxer of the Year award, chosen by boxers, in memory James Emmerson, was won by one of Keighley's Yorkshire and Humberside schoolboy championship finalists, Luke Tuck.

The newly created Ronnie Tyson Memorial Trophy, awarded for sportsmanship and fortitude in memory of a much-respected sporting figure who died this year, went to 14-year-old Matthew Booth, who also scored a memorable victory on the night.

The Danny Brothers Memorial Trophy, was awarded to the outstanding Keighley ABC boxer of the tournament, 15-year-old John Gunning.
