LITTER, rowdy youths and new housing developments have topped concerns listed by people in parts of Yeadon and Guiseley.

Drug taking and unnecessary speed bumps were also high on the list of complaints.

Every householder in the area of Queensway was asked to take part in a survey asking them what bothered them most and what they felt could be done.

Organised by Councillor Graham Latty (Con, Aireborough) the aim was to find out what could be done - if anything - to improve the area.

"Certainly the bulk of the complaints seem to do with traffic, anti-social teenagers and litter.

"People are also concerned about housing developments.

"Although there are no housing developments in Queensway, they are concerned about them in other places in Guiseley and the knock-on effect they will have on traffic congestion," said Coun Latty.

Coun Latty sent out around 2,000 of the questionnaires and has so far received more than a hundred back.

"I've been very pleased with the response," he said.

"Everyone who returned one of the surveys will get a reply from me and even if nothing can be done, I will explain why," he said.

Areas where action could be taken would be forwarded to the correct department at the council, he added.

One of the areas some people complained about was traffic calming measures in Queensway.

"Some people don't like them because they say by slowing the traffic down there is a build up of traffic that adds to the pollution.

"But you've got to weigh these things up and think what's better, making the roads safer for children, or adding to the pollution."

Another suggestion was for traffic lights to be installed at the entrance to Morrison's Supermarket on Park Road.

"Someone asked why traffic lights could not be installed at the entrance to Morrisons, but there would be a build up of traffic and difficult for anyone coming off the gyratory.

"I don't think it would be a good idea," said Coun Latty.

He also added that a common problem was with litter, with many people asking for more rubbish bins.

"Litter is a big problem, and in particular with takeaway rubbish.

"People seem to be going to the takeaways and then just leaving trays of partly consumed food about," he said.

And another was with gangs of teenagers and young people.

"People in Guiseley and in Yeadon seem to have problems with anti-social teenagers and at the Yeadon end there seems to be the added problem of them gathering around the Tarn which seems to be used by drug takers, " said Coun Latty.

He said he would look carefully at every complaint and refer them on to the correct department of the council.

"I will certainly do my best to help people.

"Some people I will contact and I will write back to everyone who returned their survey," he said.

Back in September, the Wharfedale Observer revealed problems with drug users leaving needles on football pitches at Queensway and further anti-social behaviour in the area.
