A £1.7 million caf bar based on the travels of Dr Livingstone is due to open in the city's Glydegate development.

Brook Leisure has bought the last unit in the £5.5 million development in the heart of the city's West End.

The company will create West Yorkshire's first Livingstone's bar which will bring 70 full-time and part-time jobs to the city.

The company has now obtained its 2am liquor and entertaiment licences.

A spokesman for the company said the bar would be themed on the explorations of Dr Livingstone and was expected to open in May. Other companies have already taken units which will become an Australasian-style Walkabout bar, and a Russian-type Revolution bar. They will bring about 100 jobs.

The centre in the heart of the West End pub and club land is expected to be completed in a few months time.

It will also include a night club and new public square.

The spokesman added: "We don't think there will be competition. We believe we will complement each other."

Livingstone's will be mainly a caf bar during the day but will have live bands, singers and musicians in the evenings.

Alex Munro, of Knight Frank, agent for both Glydegate and the development planned for the nearby Odeon Cinema site, said the lettings were a symbol of the confidence in Glydegate.

Mr Munro said: "Glydegate is a quality scheme and a big plus for the city. Everybody has done a cracking job.

"It has won a design award and a lot has been spent on construction."

He said there were also large numbers of large companies interested in the nearby leisure complex which would be built on the site of the Odeon when the cinema was demolished.

A casino, night club, hotel and bars are planned for the development.
