The club bouncer whose thick leather jacket helped protect him from a shotgun blast has left hospital, say police.

The man, who works as a doorman at the Priory nightclub in Lidget Green, Bradford, does not want to reveal his identity.

But he has provided police with a description of the gunman who lay in wait for him to return home at 3.30am on Saturday.

Detectives today appealed for information about the armed man who was last seen running away across the back gardens of homes in Aberford Road, off Whetley Lane, Girlington, in the early hours of Saturday.

They revealed that he had been hiding in the front garden of number 6 Aberford Road and could have been there for 30 minutes before his 31-year-old target arrived home.

The gunman is described as Asian. He has very close cut short cropped hair and wore a light-coloured jacket and dark trousers.

A police spokesman said: "The victim does not want to release his details but we can confirm that he has been discharged from hospital and his shotgun injuries were not of a serious nature. His attacker could have been waiting for some considerable time, because a man was seen acting suspiciously 30 minute before the attack."

The spokesman added: "This is not being linked to any other recent shooting incidents in West Yorkshire, but it does not seem like a random attack."

The doorman was accompanied by his 19-year-old girlfriend at the time of the shooting. Despite being shot at close range, he escaped serious injury and detectives believe his thick leather jacket took a substantial part of the impact. He was able to raise the alarm himself by calling 999 on his mobile phone.

The man's girlfriend, who lives in Lidget Green, was said to be shocked but unhurt.
