Improvements likely to cost hundreds of thousands of pounds could soon be on track at Horsforth station.

Arriva Trains Northern has submitted plans for two detached waiting rooms and a ticket office to Leeds City Council to form improvements similar to those

underway at Guiseley Station.

The renovations form part of a

nationwide scheme to improve stations. The work at Menston Station which began in 1999 cost £360,000, with work at Guiseley station expected total even more.

Plans were approved for the work at Horsforth Station in April last year after an application by Northern Spirit, but now a slightly revised application by its

successor Arriva Trains Northern has been submitted.

The application has been redesigned slightly to avoid having to make alterations to the pedestrian access ramp and members of the public have until January 27 to make comments.

The plans are included in the Horsforth and Cookridge Community Involvement Team's Community Action Plan that tackle problems with community

safety, learning, leisure, young people, housing, health, the environment, the local economy and transport and highways.

CIT members hope that there will also be provision for 20 additional off street parking spaces at the station to prevent excess parking in residential and shopping areas.

CIT Chairman Chris Townsley said: "These plans are definitely needed and I can't see anyone objecting.

"We are welcoming the plans, because they will make a lot of difference to the

station, which isn't in a great state at

the moment, and when the parking is

in place a lot of problems will be

alleviated."

Peter Cushing, a regional director at Arriva Trains Northern, said: "We are

currently working with our partners, Railtrack and the local passenger transport executive to develop plans that will make the best use of the land at Horsforth station and improve facilities for local rail passengers.

"Work to redevelop Guiseley station is progressing well and we anticipate it to be complete by early spring."
