SECURITY cameras could be installed at Otley Civic Centre in a bid to beat vandals.

Town councillors are looking into the possibility of installing CCTV cameras both upstairs and downstairs at the Cross Green building.

If everything goes to plan, it will mean cameras on both floors with a television viewing screen at the reception for the warden.

And on Monday at a meeting of the Civic Centre Committee, they will discuss quotes for the overall cost.

Councillor Ray Dunn, committee chairman, said it was hoped that the system would be paid for out of ward councillor Phil Coyne's Ward Based Initiative Money.

"As with everywhere, the Civic Centre is subject to vandalism. We also need to know who is in the building the whole time," he said.

Coun Dunn said the first step would be to find out just how much the scheme would cost so an application for RATs money could be made.

Monday's meeting at Otley Civic Centre, which is due to start after the plans meeting at 7.30pm, will also discuss the Disability Discrimination Act, due to come into force in 2004.

The council is aiming to make the building accessible to all long before the act comes into force.

Otley Civic Centre has been at the centre of controversy recently with several users criticising its condition and accessibility in the pages of the Wharfedale Observer.
