The licensee of a Bradford nightclub has refuted police claims that she is unfit to hold a drink licence.

Angela Minott told a licensing panel at Bradford Magistrates court that she had no problems with the police regarding the Planet Venus nightclub until a new inspector took over in 1999.

Miss Minott, 40, of Spring Gardens, Manningham, runs the club with her father Pearl Gladstone Minott.

She said that during a three-year period from the beginning of 1999, officers made 100 visits "or even more" to her club in Sunbridge Road. She claimed these were on the instructions of an Inspector Gerald Benson.

West Yorkshire Police has applied to revoke Miss Minott's drink licence.

Miss Minott said: "I think it's quite personal between us and Inspector Benson because I think he is trying to find any fault he can to go against Planet Venus."

But under cross-examination by barrister Rodney Ferm, Miss Minott admitted she was cautioned by an Inspector Sam Sagar in 1997 for breaching the conditions of her entertainment licence.

Earlier Mr Ferm had said a major problem was the serving of alcoholic drinks after hours on Sunday nights.

Other incidents included two shootings outside or near the club in the space of a year, known drug dealers spotted inside the club by police and door staff refusing immediate access to police officers.

But Miss Minott said the police had not approached her regarding the drug dealers.

Doorman Trevor Etienne, 37, of Whites Terrace, Manningham, who runs his own door staff agency, said he had never obstructed entry for the police.

The hearing was adjourned.
