IN BLOOM volunteers have revealed their plans to transform a green area in Guiseley with wild plants, colourful flowers and picnic benches.

Members of Guiseley in Bloom have been working with Project Guiseley and Leeds City Council to come up with improvements to Springfield Park, off Springfield Road.

Although some spring bulbs have already been planted with the help of schoolchildren, the organisers hope to embark on some more ambitious changes to the park.

So far, the plan has not been finalised, and Guiseley in Bloom is keen to hear the views and ideas of any Guiseley residents.

Their plans are expected to be on display at Guiseley Library, to give residents a chance to see what is being planned for the park.

The current plan includes planting a wildflower meadow and a 'wet meadow' in a more marshy area of the park, better suited to marshland plants.

Ideas also include building up the surrounding hedges, adding sculptures and information boards, and installing picnic tables and new footpaths.

Guiseley in Bloom would like to enlist more volunteers to help with the practical gardening work, and is keen hear residents' views.

Volunteers are also looking for photographs of the park to use in a display when the project is complete.

Guiseley in Bloom co-ordinator Shirley Hughes-Rowlands said: "We should like some more photographs of the park.

"It used to be allotments during the war, so it would be nice to have some pictures of that."

Mrs Hughes-Rowlands said the aim was to improve the green area of Guiseley, as the township does not have its own public park. She said any sponsorship from businesses would be welcome.

Trees are expected to be planted in Springfield Park in the coming weeks, by local schoolchildren with the help of Leeds City Council Wildlife and Countryside Officer Richard Lancaster.

Organisers hope that the meadows will be prepared and seeded in late March, with further planting sessions taking place in May.

Anyone who would like to help out, or give their views on the scheme, can contact Mrs Hughes-Rowlands on (01943) 872903. An 'ideas box' will be put up in Guiseley Library next to the display.
