Brilliant brushwork by a Silsden artist has provided a financial boost for a church in the town.

Frank Ayrey donated a watercolour of a winter landscape scene to Silsden Methodist Church.

The church raffled off his work of art and raised £265 towards its building development fund.

Frank, 66, from Fletcher Avenue took up painting four years ago after ill health forced him to retire early from his job as a textile weaving overlooker.

He said: "I always fancied having a go at painting but never had the time, so when I retired early I took the opportunity and spent a few years learning with Arthur Craven.

"My paintings are coming along compared to what they used to be like. The first were like painting by numbers but I'm getting more experienced now.

"This painting is just a typical snow scene in the Dales which I made up."

Frank has previously donated a painting of the Methodist Church, which raised more than £100.

The lucky winner of the snow scene was Enid Smith from Craven Drive in Silsden.

"I'm very happy because I don't often win things," said Enid. "It's a beautiful painting and I've already found a space for it on one of my walls."

The church in Kirkgate is looking at the possibility of knocking down the current premises and starting afresh.

Rosemary Wallbank, treasurer of the fundraising official group (FROG), said: "We are moving forward and a survey assessing community needs has been done.

"We have not made any decisions yet but the most cost effective decision would be to start afresh.

"We are very grateful to Frank for donating these pictures because every bit helps."
