A pensioner who was beaten with a pick-axe handle has told how he stood his ground to fend off his attackers.

The 73-year-old man from Bingley, who does not want to be named, put up a fight after the men demanded money he had taken from a cash point.

And he revealed it was the second time he had been injured in an assault after being head-butted on a bus in Keighley two years ago.

The man was bruised in the attack on Wellington Street in Bingley on Saturday at 5.20am but he was not seriously hurt.

He said: "I was walking down by the railway station towards the Main Street when a car pulled up and these fellas got out.

"One of them came across to me with a pickaxe handle and was laying into me with it. I tried to fend him off then another one decided the first one wasn't doing so well and he grabbed me and he wrestled me to the floor.

"But I think I had a bit of luck because if they had been a bit more determined I would have been hurt. I am not a tough guy but I stood my ground and knuckled down to it."

He thanked staff at the Post Office in Bingley who called the police after the attack and made him a cup of tea while he was waiting.

Police said both suspects were Asian and the man with the pick axe handle was 5ft 7ins tall, stocky build, around 30 with a moustache and was wearing head gear.

The second man was 5ft 9ins tall, slim build, around 20 with dark clothing.

Anybody who witnessed the attack should contact Keighley Police on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
