Doctors are warning that a batch of bad heroin in Keighley is posing a potentially fatal risk to people injecting the drug.

They say the bad batch of the drug going around Keighley and Bingley has led to a number of users developing infections and blood clots. And they are appealing to people not to inject the drug as it could cause more serious illness and possible fatalities.

Dr Andrew Aspin, a consultant psychiatrist at Airedale Hospital, said: "We have had ten or so people admitted to the hospital as a result of injecting this heroin.

"They are getting both infections at the point of injection and blood clots in their veins.

"It's a bad idea to inject heroin at any time but its more dangerous at the moment, and we are appealing for people to stop injecting to prevent more people developing these illnesses and more serious health problems."

Local agencies, including Airedale Community Alcohol and Drug Team and Project 6 have been informed, as has Bradford Health Authority, which is going to relay the information to local GPs.

Anyone with concerns should contact their GP or one of the agencies above.
