A serious outbreak of anthrax has occurred at Cragg Hill Farm, Horsforth. There were recently, on the holding, 33 milk cows, a number of heifers and calves, several horses and colts, and a flock of about 30 sheep. All the stock appeared to be healthy up until Friday, when one of the cows went off her food, and appeared to be suffering. The animal was treated, but as she did not recover, she was later killed. One the same day, two other cows exhibited symptoms of illness, and the veterinary surgeon was called. On his advice, the outbreak was reported to West Riding Police. An examination of one carcass and internal examination convinced the veterinary inspector that the animal which had been killed suffered from anthrax. Precautionary measures were taken, including burial of the dead cow, the isolation of the two suspected cases, and a rigid cleansing of the premises. There is some doubt as to the cause of the outbreak.
