Firefighters rescued a young Bingley couple who became trapped in their flat after a fire broke out on the floor below, leaving the building heavily smoke-logged early today.

Crews from Bingley and Shipley fire stations were called to the house on Dryden Street in Bingley town centre at 7am.

The fire is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault on a first floor fuse box.

Sub Officer Steve Brown said: "When we got there the first floor was completely smoke-logged and the couple were at the second floor window.''

Sub Officer Brown said two firemen forced their way in and led the couple down to safety. The couple, who were not injured, were checked by a waiting ambulance crew.

A woman living in a first floor flat had managed to get out of the building by the time firefighters arrived.

Sub Officer Brown added: "They saved themselves by doing exactly the right thing.

"If they'd tried to go down through the smoke they could have fallen and broken their legs or become overcome by the smoke, but instead of panicking and doing that they stayed calm, remained in their flat, went to a window, and called us which demonstrates the importance of having a fire plan and sticking to it.''
