Keighley College has hosted a regional competition in which entrants took the first step in their bid to become the UK's top trainee welder.

Five competitors did battle in the SkillWELD 2002 contest at the college's Harold Town Fabrication and Welding Workshop.

Keighley College is one of six centres around the UK being used for the regional competitions, from which the 12 highest scoring entrants will go forward to finals at Cambridge in April.

Finalists will also represent the welding industry at the UK Skills Show, at Manchester, in November.

Competitors, pictured above, in the Keighley event are Jonathan Turnbull, Jonathan Wiltshire, Jonathan Peel, Chris Gascoigne and Jamie Crawford -- who are all students at the college.

The stage winner will be announced at a ceremony in the Harold Town Building, on March 12, by principal Doug Hardaker.
