A man from the Lawkholme area has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Keighley security guard.

The 26-year-old was being questioned by detectives investigating the murder of Qadir Ahmed as the Keighley News went to press.

Detectives have also appealed for information from sport shop owners who may have sold baseball bats used in the killing of the 24- year-old victim.

Officers have traced two cars used to ram Qadir Ahmed's Rover 25 off the road before he was beaten and stabbed by a chasing gang of attackers.

And they want to hear from any witnesses who saw a dark-blue Ford Fiesta which was in the Bradford Road area of Keighley on the day of the killing. Police believe that baseball bats were used during the attack near Keighley Leisure Centre on February 13.

Detective Superintendent Phil Sedgwick, who is leading the investigation, said: "We would appeal to any sports shop owners who have stores in the Keighley and Bradford area who have sold baseball bats in the past three or four weeks to contact the incident room on 01535 617059 immediately."

These latest developments came after detectives returned to the scene last week and spoke to 1,300 motorists and pedestrians.

Det Supt Sedgwick also gave Keighley MP Ann Cryer a guided tour of the incident room.

She said: "It was just very reassuring for me so see that all this work is going on to try and solve this horrific crime.

"It was very interesting and quite fascinating, although this is a tragic case. I can assure the people of Keighley that an awful lot is going on and every avenue is being explored once, twice, three times."

It is thought up to eight men were involved in the ambush of Mr Ahmed, which happened shortly after 11pm, when he left Keighley Leisure Centre after playing football.

Mr Ahmed, of Gordon Street, Keighley, was found dead, with a fractured skull and other head wounds, on the edge of the Victoria Park roundabout.

It was the fourth death of a Keighley man arising from a gang dispute in recent months.

* A 19-year-old man from Keighley has been released from custody after he was arrested last Friday in connection with the killing.

He has been bailed to appear at a police station at a later date.

An 18-year-old arrested at the same time was also released on bail.

Amjad Ali Azam, 20, of Surrey Street, Keighley, has appeared before Bingley Magistrates charged with Mr Ahmed's murder.

Two men from Keighley who were also arrested in connection with the killing have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
