Daredevil fundraisers will be dangling off a landmark Bradford building before it is reduced to rubble.

A group of students are organising a sponsored abseil down Provincial House in Centenary Square weeks before the bulldozers move in.

The event on April 5 will be the highlight of a fun day to boost the Lord Mayor's Appeal Fund - and adventurous volunteers are needed.

Hayley Reynolds and Rachael Snutch, both 22, are two of the event management students at Leeds Metropolitan University organising the day, dubbed Pledge For The Edge.

Hayley said they decided on the venue after consulting Councillor David Ward, who is a lecturer at the UK Centre for Events Management at Leeds Metropolitan University.

She said: "It will be a really fun day and there will be quite a few local celebrities coming down, plus stalls and a raffle.

"We wanted to support the Lord Mayor's Appeal because it not only raises money for the Prince's Trust, which helps the younger generation fulfil adventures, but also the Bradford Macmillan Appeal which will help everyone."

They are hoping to attract around 150 abseil volunteers to raise a minimum of £30 each in sponsorship.

Coun Ward, who is also plucking up the courage to take part in the abseil, said: "It is a wonderful idea for a very good cause and will be a fun event in Centenary Square as well as raise the profile of the Lord Mayor's Appeal.

"I'm very much looking forward to the abseil, which looks to be about 150 feet, and I am hoping other councillors, council workers and groups will join in."

St James Securities, which is buying the ten-storey building, is due to demolish it in early May in a project expected to take around five months. Anyone who is interested in taking part in the abseil should contact Hayley for an application form on 07816 588102.
