Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates let his younger sister Nicola, pictured, steal the limelight to help raise money for two worthy causes in Bradford.

The fresh-faced 16-year-old made her first stop at Asda supermarket in Rooley Lane last night where she sang in the aisles to entertain shoppers.

Nicola's auntie Angie Baker and family friend Maxine Wardman asked the talented teenager to perform while they packed customers' bags.

And they were joined by the mum of Gareth and Nicola, Wendy, their grandmother Jenny Broadbent and aunts Mary Marsden and Linda Broadbent who all joined in the fun.

The family and friends hope to raise thousands of pounds for cancer sufferer Robyn Brooks, of Rochdale, after they learned about her plight on one of Gareth's Internet fan sites.

One cheeky autograph hunter asked Nicola to forge her brother's signature, but the Dixons CTC student admitted it was one thing even she couldn't do.

No sooner had she finished at the supermarket, Nicola was whisked off to Bradford nightclub Pennington's Live in Manningham Lane to take part in a charity talent show organised by Bradford leukeamia sufferer Emma Kaminskis.

And she wasn't the only relative of Gareth in the Stars for a Night competition. Their cousin Danny Nichol was among the 15 contestants raising money for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Sadly Emma was unable to perform a duet to open the night as she suffered a relapse and was back in hospital.

But Vanessa Hemingway, of the Anthony Nolan Trust, said: "It was such a boost to have Gareth's sister and cousin performing on the night.

"We also had Danny Tetley, who was a contestant on Pop Idol, so it was just fabulous."

An exhausted Nicola, who also wants to follow her brother into the fame game, said: "Gareth went to see Robyn and really wanted to help her.

"But he's in London so he sent me instead. I just love performing and I'd really like to be a pop star, so it was great to do both events and raise some money for such good causes."

The winner of the Stars for a Night competition was 22-year-old Gavin Raistrick. The event raised around £3,000 for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Miss Hemingway said: "It was a wonderful success and we will definitely hold it again.

"Emma was texting us all night from hospital to see how things were going."

lA fundraising concert for Robyn Brooks will be held at Pennington's on March 11. Tickets, which cost £5, are available from the box office on (01274) 224488. Anyone who wants to contribute to Robyn's Fund should call (01706) 643965.
