RUBY is among the first sports to give it's backing to 'Sport Relief' a multi-million pound charity fund-raising drive.

The campaign was the idea of Comic Relief and BBC Sport and will see all sporting organisations coming together to raise money for charities at home and overseas with a big night of sporting action on BBC1 throughout the evening of July 13.

But Rugby League and Rugby Union have joined forces to raise money with a 'Pay to Play' weekend on March 16.

Players from the top professionals to the youngest juniors will be joining in with funds being donated from win bonuses, a percentage of match subs or even sponsored events.

RFL Chairman Sir Rodney Walker said: "The RFL is right behind this fantastic initiative and I'm sure all rugby league clubs will support Sport Relief on March 16 by giving as much as they can. This is rugby league's chance to help make a difference and support a great cause."

Last year Comic Relief £61 million - and Sport Relief has that target in its sights. Since the first Comic Relief event in 1985 the charity has raised a staggering £221 million.

Top sporting personalities, including Sir Steve Redgrave, Gary Lineker, David Beckham, Martin Johnson and former League star Martin Offiah have given their support.

The Lawn Tennis Association has already launched its campaign and other sports including soccer, cricket, golf and horse racing are due to announce their plans soon.

Children and young people will benefit from every penny raised with half the money staying in the UK while the other half will go to children in the poorest countries of the world.
