THIS was Thwaites about a hundred years ago, as seen from the bottom of Thwaites Brow Road.
The view is enlarged from a postcard, a medium which encouraged local producers to record subjects and scenes which would probably not be considered commercially viable nowadays.
Like other peripheral communities which were soon to become absorbed into Keighley, Thwaites at that time had a strong sense of identity.
Residents used to hold their own annual galas, and their needs could be satisfied on the spot at W R Bracewell's grocery shop and Holmes's Ale and Porter Stores.
However, Keighley's industrial expansion in that direction entailed the demolition of some older homes. Virtually all the buildings on the left half of this photograph have since disappeared.
