Unemployment in Bradford could be radically reduced if the government abolished unnecessary regulations.

The Federation of Small Businesses claims revenue is not being generated, having an adverse effect on the economy.

The FSB, which represents small businesses and has 165,000 members, says help and advice is not enough to counter administration demands. It says small businesses need help because of the increasing number of large UK businesses relocating overseas. It claims Government aid to small businesses wanting to expand would provide a boost to the British economy.

But, it says regulations make this impossible and unemployment levels in the UK are to rise.

In Labour's first term in office, the FSB recorded 3,000 items of legislation affecting small businesses were introduced by the government.

The FSB has set up a manifesto for Yorkshire and Humberside which proposes the introduction of US-style policy, exempting small businesses from certain regulations and 'sunset clauses' which eliminate laws that are not applicable.

Tony Cherry, chairman of policy for FSB Yorkshire and Humberside, said: "There are millions of sole traders who will not employ more people because of the amount of legislation imposed on them.

"The Government has done nothing to change the situation, despite claims that it is dedicated to cutting the levels of unemployment in the UK. These businesses have a willingness to grow, but need to be supported."
