A consumer helpline run by West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service has attracted more than 100,000 calls in its first 18 months after being established.

The helpline, which provides advice and assistance, was set up as one of three pilot schemes around the country.

It handles issues ranging from the straightforward clarification of a point of law, to complex credit and debt problems.

Queries have included home working schemes, prize draws and cancellation rights.

Due to its success, the project has been extended to at least September.

Martin Wood, West Yorkshire's chief trading standards officer, said: "The helpline has ensured the region's consumers are provided with appropriate advice to empower them to deal with problems.

"It further assists in supporting complex cases and is promoting a level playing field for businesses and consumers alike."

Advice is free and impartial, and lines are open from 8.30am to 6.30pm weekdays and from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.

The helpline number is (0113) 384 8848.
