Telegraph & Argus readers are being asked to suggest a new name for the revamped John Street Market.

The market is getting a fresh start after its £4 million facelift and readers can make city centre shopping history by christening it.

The reader who comes up with the best name will win a "trolley dash" around the complex at its relaunch on June 20.

Bradford Council head of markets Malcolm Veigas said the name need not necessarily contain the word market. "We have already had some good suggestions, such as the John Street Shopping Emporium and Westgate Centre. We want to hear from T&A readers on their ideas for a great name."

The relaunch will be turned into a major celebration with entertainment throughout the day.

The John Street tenants were joined at the end of last year by stallholders from the temporary Rawson and James Street fish market.

The move vastly increased the range of goods which people can buy and the Council has been approached by people who want to sell even more lines.

The refurbishment includes a new roof and floors, improved cafes and refitted market stalls. Street improvements have also been carried out.

Mr Veigas said: "The city centre will soon have a new, exciting, modern shopping venue which aims to appeal to a broad customer base.

"The new name should reflect this and inspire both new and existing customers to visit and shop at the centre. It should also reflect the identity of this key shopping area."

Executive member for the economy Councillor Simon Cooke said: "This investment is an opportunity for a fresh start at John Street, with new shopping facilities offering quality, choice, convenience and great value.

"The Council has been working closely with the tenants at John Street, Rawson temporary market and James Street fish market at every stage of this major regeneration scheme."

A panel including the Council's customer services department, John Street tenants and local retailers will judge the competition.
