Commuters using Arriva Trains Northern services have been warned to brace themselves for a full summer of industrial action as station staff today began a 48-hour walk out.
Members of the Transport and Salaried Staff Association (TSSA) will be joined tomorrow by conductors - who are holding their own 24-hour strike - in the latest stages of a dispute between the company and the rail union the RMT over high wage increases given to train drivers compared to other Arriva staff like conductors and station and retail staff.
Arriva said it intended to operate a near normal service today and it hoped 55 per cent of trains would run tomorrow.
But today Allen Heath, RMT organiser for Yorkshire, Humberside and Lincolnshire, said no end to the dispute was in sight.
"I can see it stretching through the summer and possibly into winter," he said.
