PROUD Guiseley people saw the deputy Lord Mayor of Leeds unveil the town's new boundary stone this week.

The stone, given to the town by RG Stone Sales at Moor Top Quarry, Guiseley, has been placed in the centre reservation of the Leeds Road gyratory close to Aireborough Leisure Centre.

And at a short ceremony on Monday, the deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Frank Robinson was joined by Aireborough councillors and representatives of Guiseley in Bloom, to unveil the specially carved stone.

Shirley Hughes Rowlands, of Guiseley in Bloom, said more than 20 people attended the ceremony which was followed by drinks at Aireborough Leisure Centre.

"The rain kept off and it all went very well," she said.

Mrs Hughes Rowlands added she was very pleased Coun Robinson, who is also chairman of Yorkshire in Bloom, had visited the town which will be judged for the spring judging of the contest on Thursday, April 11.

"The judges are due to come to Guiseley in the morning, so if everybody could spruce things up first thing, that would be a big help."

It will only be the third year that Guiseley has entered the contest and it is hoping to improve on its performance last year when although it lost points on its spring judging, it picked up in the summer.

Mrs Hughes Rowlands said a great deal of effort had been made in the last few months to improve the war memorial garden, the area around the gyratory and Guiseley Health Clinic.
