With heavy rain having caused severe flooding in various parts of the country it takes a little understanding whey the Wharfe, long recognised as one of the swiftest rising rivers in the north has not overflowed its banks or even threatened to do so. In years gone by the sight of the Wharfe spreading its waters across Wharfemeadows Park was a common annual spectacle. Many people will have memories of lorries and horse drawn carts ferrying passengers from one side of Otley bridge to the other. In recent years the Wharfe seems to have behaved itself - some claim this is due to sand and gravel excavations adjacent to the river have done the trick. Whatever the reason flooding at Otley has diminished.

Beacon House on the Chevin, known locally as Jenny's Cottage, is being demolished. Although the cottage will disappear from its present site parts of it will reappear in Guiseley. Stone from the cottage is to be used to face new bungalows to be built on land in Queensway, Guiseley, by Aireborough Flower Fund Homes Committee.

At a meeting of the Governing Body of Guiseley School the governors considered the decision of the Leeds Education Committee not to proceed with the development of a sixth form at Guiseley School next September. The governors expressed disappointment at the decision, which the city council claim has been made purely on the question of available resources and they strongly questioned the basis of facts presented to the Education Committee, which the Governors believed to be incorrect. A Steering Committee was appointed of parents and staff who will be taking action to have the decision changed.
