Otley Wharfeside 3

Milford 1

THIS fixture marked Wharfeside's first league fixture in ten weeks, and with the rain-sodden pitch once again unplayable the fixture was played on Pool's Riverside pitch.

Wharfeside appeared hungry for goals from the off with Dave Penniall's first attempt producing a good save.

The following corner was swung in well and the ball found its way into the net, via the 'keeper's glove. Within minutes of the re-start Otley were on the attack again. Ian Cormack unleashed a rasping 30 yard drive into the top corner for his first goal for the club.

Wharfeside continued to press with some cleverly weighted through balls creating numerous chances for Penniall, Richmond and Jackson. The lead was then extended by the impressive Penniall who calmly rounded the defence and the 'keeper for an easy finish.

The game was by no means one-sided, though.

Milford were a constant threat but were unable to convert their limited chances thanks to some superb defending by Birch, Pinder, Irwin and J Lees. The chances that did get through to the Wharfeside goal were dealt with well by 'keeper Craig Wilkinson. Otley's first-half work ethic could not be faulted, in particular the efforts of Pullan and Jackson, who ran tirelessly.

Otley had to defend against what seemed like endless corners and eventually Milford pulled a goal back through Phil Lloyd.

Otley proved strong on the counter-attack, helped by the kicking of Wilkinson and the quick thinking of Richmond, Penniall and Ashley. Otley were denied further goals by some good goalkeeping and a couple of off-sides

Wharfeside can be very proud of their victory. All players clearly gave their all, with all of the back four giving classy performances.

The versatility of the midfield showed that Wharfeside has a vast amount of talent in that department and the forwards once again showed how clinical they can be on their day. Special mentions must go to Pinder, Jackson and Richmond for outstanding displays but the Man-of-the-Match went to Aston Pullan, who ran tirelessly and battled at both ends of the field.

Wharfeside would like to thank Peter Wilkinson for his kindness in allowing them to use the Pool pitch. The match was sponsored by JR Sports Otley.
