Huddersfield YMCA 2nd 14, Keighley 2nd 38 - Keighley took the entire first half before they eventually become interested in this game even though the weather was excellent for a running game.

The first try was scored by scrum half Martin Uren who started the move on the half way line breaking down the blindside he was ably supported by John Gibson and Nick Wright. The final pass came from Gibson and Uren touched down under the posts.

This gave Duncan Grant an easy conversion kick.

It looked as if Keighley were in for an easy ride, but then they went to sleep and allowed Huddersfield to take control of the game. Huddersfield kicked their first penalty, but Keighley replied with a try by Martin Whitcombe who drove over from a yard out. Huddersfield took advantage of a further penalty and tagged on a further three points.

Grant extended the lead with a penalty goal. Just on half time Keighley gave away another penalty which was converted to put Huddersfield within six points.

Martin Uren's team talk at half time worked wonders for Keighley as they were soon rattling up the scores. First to score was Matthew Cox whose blistering pace down the left wing was too much for the opposition. He ran in from thirty-five yards out to score under the posts. This gave Grant an easy kick for the extra two points.

The Keighley forwards were now punching holes in the defence and with Paul Salmon leaded the way. From one of his breaks he appeared to have put Neil Scott away for a try, but the referee adjudged they had been a knock on and called back the play. Another barging run by Salmon set up a try for Matt Gaffney back playing after a two-month lay off. Grant again kicked the goal.

Nick Wright on the right wing was then unlucky not to score when he chipped ahead only for the ball to roll dead before he could touch down. Wright was not to be denied when Cavender gave him a long pass, which gave Wright the chance to crash over in the corner for his try. Grant kicked a good conversion form the touchline. Next to score was Peter Schofield who collected the ball in the lineout after a poor throw by the Huddersfield hooker. He crossed unopposed for the try. Grant kept up the scoring by kicking his sixth goal.

Huddersfield then threw all into attack and after a series of penalties on the Keighley line it looked as if Keighley's defence had weathered the storm, but at last one of their forwards was driven over for a consolation try. The conversion was missed and this was the last action of the game
