Detectives hunting Bradford's "most wanted" rioter Mohammed Shakeel had a good response following an appeal in the Telegraph & Argus and on BBC's Crimewatch.

Photographs of Shakeel and two other rioters - Zaheer Abbas Bashir and Mohammed Nadeal Abbas - were last night broadcast nationwide on the BBC programme in a bid to trace their whereabouts.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police today said: "As regards Crimewatch and the appeal through the local press, we have had a number of positive leads, which have been forwarded to the incident room and will be followed up."

Officers want to trace 22-year-old Shakeel in connection with a violent attack that took place during the riots last summer. Shakeel is from Bradford, but could now be in Sheffield or Birmingham.

Mohammed Nadeal Abbas, 19, and Zaheer Abbas Bashir, have both gone on the run after being charged with riot.

Speaking after last night's programme, Acting Detective Inspector Paul Harrison, of Operation Wheel, said the public had provided some useful information. "We are hoping it is going to pick up because we had a good response following the article in the Telegraph & Argus," he said.

He added that Crimewatch viewers had not come forward with new sightings of the men, but offered useful information.

"We can't measure the success in one night, because some people may put off calling until tomorrow," he said. "I would also imagine there will be shock in the community where these people live after seeing them on television which may delay people from calling us."

Abbas failed to attend a court hearing on December 11 and Bashir failed to appear in court on January 7.

Anyone with information about the three is urged to contact the incident room on (01274) 376915 or the Urdu speaking language line on (01274) 376916.
