This year's Bingley Show will be bigger and better than ever, organisers vowed today.

And they are confident they have sorted out the problems of the last show.

The annual one-day family event - the biggest of its kind in Yorkshire - will include an extravaganza of entertainment, equestrian competitions and horticultural displays.

Organised by the Airedale Agricultural Society, the 123rd show will be held at the Bradford and Bingley Sports Ground in Wagon Lane, Bingley, on Wednesday, August 7.

Teddy Wright, the show's publicity officer, said: "There's something for everyone and we've addressed the problems that came up at the last show."

The event controversially moved from Myrtle Park to the sports ground in 2000 because of health and safety fears and parking problems in the town centre. It was cancelled last year because of foot-and-mouth.

"At the last show people were concerned about letting the wagons enter the sports ground by the visitors' entrance so this year we're using a route down Airedale Avenue for the larger vehicles," said Mr Wright.

He said the ground lay-out had been altered to allow traders to set up stalls closer to the entrance. Equestrian competitions, show-jumping and displays would be on the other side of the River Aire. "We are giving traders free stalls for the day and hope as many people as possible will show their support for this popular event," said Mr Wright.

Councillor Colin Gill (Con, Bingley) said he hoped visitors would spend time in the town centre. "Traders' business has certainly been adversely affected by the decision to move the show to the Bradford and Bingley Sports Ground," he said. "I would still hope at some point we can return it to Myrtle Park."

Entertainment will include a demonstration by the Company of Horsemen, from Stoke-on-Trent, featuring daredevil riders in colourful costumes taking part in Cossack, Wild West and Medieval displays.

An aerobatics show, Henry the Tank Engine and some animals from Bradford City Farm will be on show. Parking will be provided at a field near the Fisherman's pub in Dowley Gap Lane and a free shuttle bus will run to and from Bingley railway station and the showground. Schedules will be available from the show office on (01274) 564400 and via e-mail from the website www.bingleyshow.co.uk
