Guiseley 5

Belper Town 4

IF it is goals you want to see get down to Nethermoor where as well as scoring them their defence is leaking them as their Jekyll and Hyde performances continue.

Guiseley - still with an outside chance of one of those promotion play-off places - were five goals up and cruising. They then produced some poor defending and conceded four goals to a Belper side that had looked even worse than the Chorley side that had been beaten 4-1 at Nethermoor.

Without both their leading scorers - Mark Stuart was on the bench after missing the last game and Ryan Senior was still on the sidelines with injury - Guiseley started strongly and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring on 15 minutes.

Ian McLean's left foot cross-cum-shot evaded Belper 'keeper James Baker, who was under pressure from Nicky Hey, and struck the inside of the far post before nestling in the back of the net. Hey then broke clear on the left but his cross eluded Henry and Cooke. Ben Thackwray then tried his luck with a speculative lob from 25 yards.

Inbetween Carl Cunningham had tested John Lamb a couple of times but with Guiseley in determined mood it was odds on that a second goal could come and so it should have been on 27 minutes when Richard Chattoe was held in the area. McLean strode up to take the penalty but somehow shot wide.

Two goals in the three minutes before the break settled Guiseley nerves as first Peter Sumner shot home from 12 yards and then Dave Henry netted the third on 42 minutes after good work by Hey, McLean and Chattoe on the left.

The second-half started with the injured Cooke and Thackwray replaced by Newhouse and Stuart. Both looked inspired substitutions as Newhouse first pulled the ball back for Stuart to place a shot out of the reach of Baker. Stuart then returned the compliment for Newhouse to score with a left foot shot just inside the near post.

Cruising at 5-0 this looked an easy afternoon's work for Guiseley even when Lamb came out and fumbled a cross leaving Cunningham to cross for one of his colleagues to shoot home via James Nettleton's attempted clearance.

Even then it looked as though Belper were just making the scoreline look a little more respectable when Trevitt made a hash of clearing a ball on the edge of the area and Belper scored a second.

The Guiseley defence then failed to cut out a loose ball on the edge of the area and it was 5-3 as Cunningham was left with the easiest of tap-ins.

Newhouse had a chance to settle the game for what was now looking a ragged Guiseley side with a half chance from Trevitt's header into a crowded area from a corner.

With five minutes left Belper pulled a further goal back to jangle the nerves of the home supporters. Belper got the ball in the net again only for the goal to be disallowed for off-side. This did little to quell Guiseley's anxieties.

The final whistle finally brought some relief to the frazzled Guiseley players and spectators.

Guiseley 1

Witton Albion 1

Guiseley netted late in the game on Monday through substitute Ryan Senior but then threw away the points when Witton Albion scored in the dying seconds.

Senior had come on as a replacement for Peter Sumner after missing a number of games with a knee injury. He made his presence felt lifting the ball over the 'keeper for a fine goal four minutes from time - his 17th in 20 appearances for Guiseley.

Just as the Guiseley supporters were celebrating another win Witton hit back. They forced a corner and when the ball rebounded off one of their players it fell for Simon Burton. John Lamb looked to have the short covered but on the hard surface the ball bounced over his hand.

l On Saturday Guiseley visit Gretna and the Reserves entertain Marine (3 pm). On Monday Harrogate Town visit Nethermoor (7.45 pm).
