Baildon Boundary Way Mixed-Terrain Half Marathon has always been a popular event but in recent years Baildon Runners have scaled back the race to a limit of 400 which it readily reaches.

The start point and route have been revised over the years and this year winner Robin Lawrence (Bingley) created a new course record in 1.19 29 almost three minutes ahead of Steve Webb (Valley Striders). For Skyrac Duncan Asquith was 31st in 1.32.00 followed by 58th Peter Rawnsley in 1.37.19, 76th Bob Pritchard in 1.40.00.

Roger Dawson who is concentrating on getting miles in his legs prior to his umpteenth Three Peaks Race later in April was 246th in 2.10.06.

The 25 mile Blubberhouses Moor Challenge is a classic LDWA event which this year reached its 20th anniversary. The route takes in some of the glories of Wharfedale and winner on Sunday was John Woolton (Bingley) in 3 hrs 16 mins. Skyrac's Andy Brear was 4th (3.31) with Graham Grinstead 5th in 3.40.

The 4.5 mile Pendle race held on Saturday is a classic short fell race with 1500 feet of climb. From a field of 233 the race was won by Simon Bailey (Staffordshire Moorlands) in 30.37, thirty seconds ahead of ex-Skyrac runner Gary Devine (Pudsey and Bramley). For Skyrac Graham Breeze was 104th in 41.33.

Otley Athletic Club

Due to unforeseen circumstances Otley AC had to withdraw from the National 12-stage road relays in Stockport, last Saturday. Despite the setback, a few who were in the team did the Baildon Boundary way which is all off road around Saltaire, Esholt, and around to Baildon.

The winner came in 1.19 while Otley's Julian Mawson finished a creditable third in 1.22. Coming into form Mick Jeffrey finished in 1.31, and a jet-lagged Colin Best finished in 1.51. This weekend, Ian Fisher will bleach his head pure white as serious preparation for the London Marathon.

His aim is to beat his pb of 2.20.27 secs. Andrew Robertshaw will join him near the front aiming to beat 2.41.

Tom Hannah, Kath Robertshaw and Neil Cayton are also competing.

Otley AC is a friendly club which meets up at Cross Green on Tuesdays 7.15pm and Thursdays 7.15pm. Everyone is made welcome.

Skyrac AC

At the weekend, seven of the region's athletes, six of them from Skyrac AC, took part in the popular Kingston Upon Hull AC Open Meeting at a windy but warm Costello Park Stadium. A successful day was had by all and in total they won 14 medals between them - five gold, seven silver and two bronze.

Andrew Staniland, in his first year as an Under-17 man, was the youngest of the Skyrac athletes to compete, and he set three personal best performances in his three events. These came with victories in the long jump with 5.98m, and in the discus (1.5kg) with 33.72m. He was then a close second in his first ever 100m hurdles race in 15.2s.

Senior woman Fiona Thomas also came home with three trophies. She ran a fine 100m for second place in 12.9s and putted the shot (4kg) 10.26m, also for second position, her best performance in this event for some time. Her last event of the afternoon was the discus (1kg) and here again she threw well, a pleasing 29.15m for the bronze medal.

Also for Skyrac's women learning difficulty athlete Heather Sayer took part in a combined Under-15 girls / senior women's high jump competition. In this she jumped 1.34m for fifth place overall but picked up the silver medal in the senior section of the event. Heather was also delighted to set a personal best in the 100m with 15.8s.

Three of Skyrac's senior men continued to press home the club's success. Dave McCabe again showed good early season form for second place in the 100m (12.1s) and then leaped 5.46m in the long jump for another silver medal.

This latter event was won by team-mate and junior man Shayne Thomas with 5.48m. Shayne had earlier come sixth in the javelin (800g) with a 31m plus throw. Although still plagued by hamstring trouble Darren Thomas produced two creditable throwing performances with 10.63m in the shot (7.26kg) for fourth place and 38.91m in the javelin (800g) for the bronze medal.

Horsforth's Bethany Staniland, who competes for the host club, enjoyed a rare visit to her 'home' track. Here she achieved victory in the U-15 girls' shot (3.25kg) with a magnificent 10.40m. Not only was this a personal best performance but another English Schools' Championships qualifying distance to go with the one already achieved in the discus.

There was no U-15 girls' discus at the meeting, so Bethany had entered the U-17 women's event (1kg) and promptly won it with 27.47m. She was also second in the U-15 girls' 800m in 2mins.28.5s, but like all the middle distance runners, suffered on the windy back straight.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Pennines, Skyrac's first year Under-17 woman multi- eventer Amy Howard, 15, enjoyed a hat- trick of first positions at the Trafford AC Open Meeting at Longford Park Stadium.

These were achieved with 29.71m in the discus (1kg), 4.56m in the long jump and 9.09m in the shot (4kg). She also took part in her first ever 300m race, and was pleased with 48.1s for third place.
