Bradford servicemen and women have been urged to put accounts of their war experiences into an historical archive to raise money for injured soldiers.

Former Bradford Para David Brown, of Thornton, is northern secretary of the South Atlantic Medal Association set up after the 1982 conflict.

The 40-year-old landed on the Falkland Islands on his 21st birthday and fought with 2 Para in the battles of Goose Green and Port Stanley.

He has backed fellow Falklands survivor Simon Weston who is spearheading the initiative by the Royal Star & Garter Home for Disabled Ex-Service Men and Women to create an archive called the Odyssey Timeship.

The project has been launched to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the conflict, which began on April 2, 1982.

The charity aims to create a record of service life in the 20th and 21th Centuries, covering all the major conflicts British soldiers have been involved in up to the present day.

Stories and accounts, which can include photographs, must be sent in before the closing date of June 6.

To put a story into the archive costs £10 which goes towards the upkeep of the RS&G Home in Surrey.

Once completed, the archive will be stored at the Imperial War Museum until the year 2101. Mr Brown said: "When I was younger I was taught all about the world wars at school and the sacrifices that were made by soldiers who laid down their lives for their country.

"This archive will be an invaluable record for generations to come.

"I would urge any servicemen and women to consider contributing towards it and help their less fortunate colleagues who were injured in the line of duty."

Mr Weston, who is the vice-president of the home, was horrifically burned when the Argentineans bombed the Royal Navy ship the Sir Galahad on June 8 during the conflict.

He said: "I have been fortunate to recover enough from my injuries to carry on a normal life. But many men and women who have served their country do need specialist care due to illness or injury.

"The Royal Star & Garter Home can give them the very best of this.

"The Odyssey Timeship Project is a very fitting way to commemorate the anniversary of the Falklands Conflict anniversary and those who took part, as well as to help the home carry on its important work."
