Gary Moorby today promised to bring six new faces into his starting line-up by June.

The Cougar coach has a shopping list of eight players in mind and is determined to shake things in time for the resumption of the Northern Ford Premiership.

His list includes wingers, prop forwards, back row forwards and centres, both amateurs and those with Super League experience.

Moorby is hoping to have some in place ready for the visit to Sheffield a week on Sunday, but guarantees changes in personnel by June 2.

"Everyone knows we need to bring players in to the Cougars," said the coach.

"It is as much to provide competition for places as anything else.

"Of course we need some experience in this very young side, but the main priority is adding depth.

"We lost 52-8 on Sunday but I can't drop anyone.

"Whatever performance the players put in I have to play the same team week in, week out - and that is not good for anyone."

Moorby feels the new players are needed to stop his side playing like an inexperienced boxer.

"When you take a big hit, you should cover up, regroup and then come back big," said the experienced coach and former pro.

"But we don't do that. We take an uppercut on the chin just before the bell on a regular basis.

"We shouldn't be conceding just before half-time, it is a classic sign of inexperience.

"When we are up against the ropes, we need to just concentrate on completing our sets, put in a good kick and chase and relieve the pressure - but instead, we just panic."

One of the main obstacles in Moorby's search for players is the lack of money available.

This has been made all the more difficult by the ridiculous pay demands of greedy players.

The Cougars have inquired about several former York Wasps players but have been unable to meet any of their wage demands.

"We are just not in a position to even start negotiations at the level they want.

"As a club we are determined to remain on a sound financial footing, although it does present difficulties when trying to build a team," added Moorby.

"You can see how clubs have got themselves into difficulties, when they are paying the crazy salaries."

Former York player Peter Edwards, who came off the bench on Sunday for Doncaster, is a perfect example of the problems.

His £400 a win demands, which presumably have been matched by the South Yorkshire side, is more than some Super League clubs pay.

Although the National League Cup is an irrelevance, at least it is one that gives the Cougars plenty of time to strengthen and rebuild.
