Junior Witter has been given a shot at one of boxing's four recognised world titles.

Bradford light-welterweight Witter, who last month won the British crown, will challenge holder DeMarco Corley for the WBO belt on June 1.

The fight will take place at the MEN Arena in Manchester on the Ricky Hatton undercard.

Witter said: "This is the real big time for me. I hoped that beating Alan Bosworth for the British title would open the door and now I intend to step through.

"Corley has got the same world ranking as Hatton but his belt is worth a lot more. It's a huge opportunity for me and I must admit I'm surprised it has come off.

"Frank Warren was talking about getting me a chance for something big. I was looking for the Commonwealth but this is much better.

"Corley is a tricky southpaw with some good moves but I haven't seen a lot of him. I'm going out to Gran Canaria for a week's sparring and then I'll do my homework."

Corley, who is being lined up by Warren for a crack at Hatton in September, said: "I will make Witter fight and then I will destroy him."

l Bobby Vanzie's European lightweight title fight against Italian Sandro Casamonica will now take place in Catania, Sicily a week tomorrow.

Vanzie was told recently that it would happen in Verona. He said: "It's all gamesmanship designed to unsettle me. But the Italians are wasting their time if they think it will work."
