In the Northern Schools cross country junior championships at Heaton Park, Sam battled all the way with the leaders but had to settle for runners-up spot four seconds behind the winner. Richard, a year younger, finished a creditable 43rd.
At the South Leeds Stadium, running for his club, Sam was 15th - and third Bingley Harrier - in the men's five-mile race while Richard, running for Keighley & Craven, was 56th in a field of more than 200 in the Blackpool 10K.
