Little Robyn Brooks was today flying to America, where doctors will battle to save her life.

The six-year-old cancer sufferer set off from Manchester Airport this morning ahead of a six-month-long trip partly funded by Bradford people.

Robyn's family decided to leave immediately after the NHS refused to carry out vital tests which the youngster needs before treatment.

They will now have to fork out an extra £20,000 to cover the cost of the tests in New York.

Robyn, who suffers from an aggressive form of cancer regarded as terminal by UK doctors, will receive pioneering treatment from Dr Brian Kushner, who met her last month.

"He was so shocked when he saw her to find out how well she was because he had thought there was very little hope," said her mum Karen. "He certainly thinks the treatment is worth giving a go."

Angie Baker, part of the Bradford-based Robyn's Fund committee, said she was "disgusted" that the hospital had refused to fund the treatment - but urged Bradford supporters, who have already raised more than £15,000 for Robyn, to keep going.
