Dinnington 19, Yarnbury 15:YARNBURY lost out in the Yorkshire Shield final at Morley to a Dinnington side who overcame the handicap of some appalling set piece play to recover from 15-5 deficit to win with some daring and inventive play.

Dinnington clung on for grim life for the last 23 minutes after going ahead with a try by Dean Lax.

It was not to be third time lucky in a Shield final for the Horsforth side who had dominated the early exchanges.

Dinnington had opened the scoring after 22 minutes on their first foray into Yarnbury territory. Hooker Carl Esberger burst free from a ruck and found full-back Gareth Peasgood. As he was tackled England Under-18 winger Chris Hallam was on hand to finish off the move in the corner.

Yarnbury hit back with penalty from Steve Galbraith. Another effort from him hit the post and from the ensuing ruck centre Richard Sharpe took a short pop pass to sprint over and give his side a 10-5 lead at the break.

Five minutes into the second-half Yarnbury forged ahead at 15-5 when winger Steve Mather powered past some weak tackling to score.

The ball was quickly spun wide and Mather beat four men to score.

Dinnington's challenge looked to have petered out but they dug in deeply and their spirited hooker Esberger powered over for a try from a tap penalty.

Then came a stunning third try from the South Yorkshire side. It started with a forward rumble near their own 22 and gathered momentum with a break from centre John Davidson. Fly-half Dean Lax was there to finish off the move.
