A veteran of the American Civil War has been honoured almost a century after his death.

A marker has been placed at the Shipley grave of Private Thomas Hill by Civil War buff John Collier, pictured.

It is thought as many as 2,000 British-born veterans of the 1861-65 war are buried in this country. Mr Hill enlisted in the Union Army's 124th Pennsylvania Infantry in 1862 and fought in the battle of Antietam, the 'bloodiest day in American history' when more than 25,000 died. He is buried at Windhill Cemetery.

Mr Collier, 47, of Scarborough, wants to trace Mr Hill's descendants, who he hopes can attend a special dedication service at the cemetery later this year.

He is trying to locate the graves of two Confederate veterans said to be buried at Bingley and wants to hear of other local people who fought in the war.
