A woman had to be cut free from her car by firefighters after an accident in Wakefield Road earlier today.

She was trapped in her navy Rover 214 for more than half an hour after the collision with a silver Renault Megane at 7am.

The male driver of the Megane was treated by the roadside for shock with oxygen and wrapped in blankets. He had been heading down Wakefield Road towards Bradford city centre.

Ian Asquith, 33, of Idle, was on his way to work with a colleague at Initial City Link when he saw the accident near the Vicar Lane complex.

"I was just behind her, it could have been us," he said. "We stopped the van and ran over straightaway. The woman was talking but bleeding from her head. She said she couldn't feel anything in her left leg."

Mr Asquith called for the emergency services and spoke to the woman, who was heading to Croft Street, until they arrived.

The Rover was badly damaged in the accident, which blocked one lane of busy Wakefield Road leaving rush-hour traffic moving slowly through the area. The Megane was also badly damaged.

Leading firefighter David Smith, of Bradford Fire Station said: "The lady was trapped when we arrived and we assisted paramedics. We used cutting equipment to remove the roof and she was taken out on a spine board.

"The other driver was out of his car when we arrived and was sitting on the grass verge with somebody comforting him. His airbag had gone off."

The woman was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

PC David Berry, of Odsal Road Traffic Police, said: "The lady was coming across Wakefield Road and the man was travelling down. The collision on the left hand of the Rover side spun her into the traffic lights."

He appealed for witnesses to call Odsal Road Traffic on 0845 6060606.
