A former car sales garage could be transformed into a halal meat butchery and distribution centre.

The £250,000-plus development would also include a retail outlet selling Asian foods and spices.

Behind the scheme - for the now-vacant Sunwin Peugeot site in Alice Street, Keighley - is Yorkshire Halal Meat Suppliers Limited.

The company currently operates from premises at Dalton Lane in the town, but has outgrown the site.

Most of the operation would be transferred to Alice Street, with the creation of around 20 new full and part-time jobs.

Butchery, packaging and distribution - primarily to restaurants and the catering trade - would be carried out from the site, but there would be no slaughtering of animals.

Around one quarter of the ground floor would be dedicated to selling foods and spices. Parking provision would be included on site.

Agent Nick Lajszczuk, of architectural consultants and surveyors Eye-4-Design, said the development would further stimulate Keighley's economy and improve an eyesore site.

He told us: "The building, which currently degrades the whole of Alice Street, will be given a facelift. The work will revitalise the street scene.

"This is a major investment for Keighley, and we are certain that demand is there for the facilities. We know that around 20 to 30 restaurants already go out of town - to Leeds and Bradford - for supplies, and we want to keep trade in Keighley.

"I am pleased that local businesses are investing in the town, and I hope it will give confidence to others."
